Finding Jacob Knorr - Part 3

I'm so excited! I found the record of the whole family coming over from Germany. I also found a few more Knorr's that I didn't know about. They arrived on the 27th of November into New Orleans in 1848 on the Agnes. They left the port of Bremen. Can you imagine the difference in climate in New Orleans vs. Illinois in November? I wonder how long it took them to get to Illinois? Jacob was there by the 1850 census, I know that.

I went to the German Facebook page and Matthias helped me translate it:

looks like Großgrabe (you can also write Grossgrabe). There are two Grossgrabe in Germany: Weinbergen-Großgrabe, county Unstrut-Hainich, state Thuringia (Thüringen) and Großgrabe, Kamenz county, state Saxony.

Another person found more information:
According to passengerlists.de, the Agnes left Breman on Sept 20, 1848 under Captain H. Kruse for New Orleans with 194 passengers. Sadly, the passenger list itself does not seem available on this site.

There are two separate families - Sebastian and Jacob. I want to find out what happened to Sebastian Knorr who is listed as a child of Jacob also. The older Sebastian is five years older than my Jacob and I'm thinking he's a brother.

It appears my Jacob's middle name was Andrew? All that's listed is Andr.

I read history of Germany around that time and I'll post details once I find the source again. Germany was going through a lot of changes during the mid 1800's and it possibly led to their immigration. I hope they found America was everything they hoped it would be.

If anyone could read the rest of the record, I would appreciate it. I think the city is listed but I'm not sure.

Just What I Need - Another Controversy!

We descend from Benjamin Harrington - the illustrious Harrington who the controversy appears to be about. My Benjamin Harrington was from Bath, England and the other from the East Coast. Whatever. Perhaps family and bloodline are two separate things, although it shouldn't be. Until something is proven, I'll leave it as is because it's all I know.

Now I find another controversy in the family. John Harris and Bridget Angiers. How many more will I find? Will I ever find out the truth? It's why we do research in the first place. Some may want to prove an important heritage but whatever mine is, I just want the facts and that's a little difficult as a new genealogy researcher. There are no paper trails to follow in some cases.

I really don't care who descends from whom as in trying to prove royal heritage. I just want to identify my ancestors and where I originate whatever I might find.

My children can follow their ancestry back to Abraham Lincoln through their Father's side. No controversy there, it was as easy as pie.

Wonder what I'll find on the German side? ;) It's an interesting process!

Looking for Jacob Knorr b. 1800 - Brake, Germany

This is what I know about Jacob Knorr:

Born in 1800 in Germany, died in 1872 in Adams Co, Illinois.

The record that cites his arrival in 1834 is in error. That Jacob Knorr died on the way over. He couldn't have arrived in 1834 if he had children born in Germany from 1834-1843.

He settled in Illinois. His children were born in Germany, with the last one in 1843 in Westfalen/Westfalia yet he shows up on the 1850 census in Illinois. Immigration must have been between 1843 and 1850.

Wife was either Wilhelmina Nickeloid (most sources) or Johanna Charlotte d. 1846 (no sources except other family trees.Could Johanna be his first wife? Perhaps die in childbirth?

(I suspect "Nickeloid" might have been an "Americanized" version of the name. I can find no Nickeloid's in Germany other than her record that says she was from Germany).

Children were:

David b. 1834 in Germany
Frederick J. b. 1838 in Westfalen, Westphalia, Germany
Amelia b. 1840 in Preuben - the "b" is a German character and I believe it means "Prussia"
Christopher B. b. 1843 in Westfalen, Westphalia, Germany

On various census reports, I've seen Hanover, Bremen, Prussia and Germany as originations. I suspect they are all true as I believe Hanover is a part of Prussia in approx. 1850. Westfalia is further south, am I correct?

I have a German ships list (military service?) with a Jacob Knorr aboard that lists his hometown as Brake, which I believe was part of Bremen in 1850. (If this is the same Jacob, but the location and time period fits. I'm not sure how many Jacob Knorr's were named in that time period).

I've started learning a little German to help with reading parish's records - just as it pertains to genealogy which is a task in itself.

This is a new blog and I'm not sure how many people will read this but if you know of Jacob or have tips on how I can find him, could you please leave a message?

Finding Jacob Knorr's Roots - Part 2

I'm determined to trace Jacob Knorr back to Germany. I've found conflicting information considering what I thought I knew about him! My Father was Emerson L, son of Frederick A. Knorr and Emma Kendall. Frederick A. was son of Frederick J. and Matilda Weidenhamer. Frederick J. was son of my Jacob who would be my great-great grandfather.

I've managed to trace other grandparents back to their roots but Jacob is difficult. I have no knowledge of the German language nor what other names they might have used.

I've followed a few trees and at first I thought Jacob's wife was Johanna Charlotte. Paper trails lead me to believe it's Wilhelmina. Could his wife's name be a combination of the two? I'm not sure.

I found a ships list from Bremen with Jacob Knorr aboard. Evidently it is his service record in Germany? He would have been 26 years old. It's documented in the previous post.

I found Wilhelmina as head of house in 1870 with Christopher and Amelia in the household. Where's Jacob?

Source: 1870 Census, Ellington Township, Adams, Illinois.

Jacob died in 1872 I thought. It's what his stone says. Perhaps he was in a care home? Remember, the previous census lists "Mene" as Jacob's wife so this would fit as a nickname for Wilhelmina. This census also lists a little girl named "Julie" Barcherding. Who's this?

The Amelia Borcherding Confusion

Fred and Matilda also had a daughter named "Amelia". It makes things confusing!

There is an Amelia Knorr who married Diedrich Borcharding on Sept. 22, 1859. Source: Adams County Court Records, Adams County, Illinois. Film # 1845384 -1845385.

Then Christopher also married a Borcharding. He married Wilhelmina Borcharding on Nov. 6, 1873. Source: Adams County Court Records, Adams County, Illinois. Film # 1845384 -1845385.

Maybe the brother and sister married siblings? I'm not sure. I still haven't found another instance of Julia Borcharding.

Last, Amelia Borcharding's death certificate lists Wilhelmina and Jacob Knorr as her parents. That makes the case of Wilhelmina being the children's mother. Jacob could have been married twice but I've found no sources to suggest that happened. Source for the death certificate:

Finding Roots for Jacob Knorr from Illinois

I've been searching pages and pages of ships lists, newspaper reports, trees and other lists for information on my Jacob Knorr. Some information lists his origins as Bremen, Germany, and others as Wurttemberg. I found this info suggesting he was enlisted in the German army - if it's him at all. If not, it will give me a city in Germany to search:

This would make him 26 years old during his time of service. If it's not him, at least it gives me a new lead. This document lists the ship he arrived on, provided it's not the same record that says that Jacob Knorr died on the way over. Hopefully there were two that came in 1834 because the one most trees document lists the passenger as "died". Gotta read those sources!

This Jacob arrived on the ship Cassander. That's new information.
Source: Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Baltimore, 1820-1834; Surnames K-L, p. 348.

Next, I attempted to find a passenger list for the Cassander. A short search returned no results but I found a lot of people looking for the same. Isn't there a link to passenger lists on ships? I tried everyone I knew.
I found his name and that of his son, Frederick in a Quincy, IL newspaper:
Right column, middle of the page you will find their names.
Source: All the History of Adams Co, Illinois, Biographical Directory, Ellington Township, p a724a.
He and his son must have lived on adjoining land? It appears the listings here are by section and I am assuming it is referring to land.

Last but not least, there is another tree on Ancestry that lists Wilhelmina (Mene) Nickeloid as his wife with David, born in Germany 1834, Frederick J. born in Westfalen/Westphalia 1838, Amelia born in Preuben 1840 and Christopher B. born in Westfalen/Westphalia in 1843.

That would rule out him coming over in 1834. They are shown on the 1850 census with the wife as "Mene", not Johanna Charlotte as I originally found.
1850 Census, Ellington, Adams Co., Illinois
So! I guess it's back to the drawing board. My thoughts were that there weren't two Jacob Knorr's coming over in 1834 anyway. He had to have come over after 1843 but before 1850. That narrows it down a bit.
